Today, I will be talking about a newspaper article I read today. The topic is abusing of maids. This is an event-driven story. I chose this article as I think many people are bullying and abusing people and I want to tell everyone about the seriousness of this.
The article can be found in the Home section of today's newspaper. The page is B4. It is actually about a mother-daughter pair abusing maid. When I first read this article, I was indeed appalled to see that some Singaporeans still abuse maids. I could not believe that they could actually abuse her till she escaped.
They admitted grabbing the maid's hair, slapping and hitting her and stamping on the maid's leg. This led to the maid escaping from the fifth-floor flat and found refuge at a mosque.
I personally feel that the pair was a bit over the board. We hire maids to help do housework, not abuse them. If you were the person being abused, how would you feel? Probably you would think that fighting back is an option. However, if you were the only one in Singapore as you wanted to earn money and send some back to support your family, you are most probably vulnerable. I nearly forgot, you are most probably a boy so you would not become a maid. However, just put yourself into their shoes.
Please leave your valuable comments.
I am saddened by this news. The maid should not be abused at all , she is there to work there. It is such a tragic....
ReplyDeleteMaids are meant to work for us and help us. Many families hire them as they are working and are unable to take care of the house frequently. However, it is such a tragic, like what Sheng Yao said, to see such things happening.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest having a course to educate those who wish to hire maids before they are allowed to hire them. Maids can be brought back to the centre fortnightly so that they can give feedback privately and confidentially to whether they are being abused off. Before that, the maid must be assured that the interview is confidential so that they will voice out their thoughts from their hearts and let the centre understand if the maid is being abused off. This might help reduce maid abuse in Singapore.
